THE THERAPEUTIC RELATIONSHIP

It is important to have a realistic expectation of what can be accomplished in therapy. For example, a medical doctor can be helpful to a patient by prescribing medications or performing surgery; but the doctor can't heal the patient - because healing comes from within. Similarly, the therapist can't "fix" a person or solve their problems for them; the therapist can only guide the person in the healing process.

Research has shown that the single most important factor in whether therapy is successful is the degree to which the person is at ease with the therapist, i.e. the interpersonal chemistry - and not the number of diplomas on the therapist's wall.

The client's input is an essential part of his/her therapy. It is important that we talk about not only the issues for which you have come to therapy but also discuss and agree on the goals for your therapy. I encourage the patient to speak about any changes s/he would like to see in how their therapy is proceeding.

The Texas State Board for Licensed Professional Counselors has a brochure that describes the relationship with a counselor and what can be expected from the counseling experience.

Confidentiality: One of the most important aspects of the therapeutic relationship is the expectation that your personal issues will remain private. And under most circumstances, anything discussed in therapy is confidential. However, State law has made important exceptions to confidentiality such as when the safety or well-being of children or the elderly is at stake. Confidentiality is described in the State Board's brochure referred to above. Confidentiality issues will be discussed before we begin therapy.

Fees and Insurance: My standard fee for psychotherapy is $110. Please be aware that this rate is subject to change but will not change for at least one year from the beginning of your therapy. Under unusual circumstances a payment schedule may be arranged. If you have questions about financial arrangements, please discuss these during the initial appointment or as soon as a need arises.

Some insurance companies may cover mental health therapy. I have chosen to not be an "in-network" health insurance provider. However, I generally cooperate with patients who choose to apply for out-of-network reimbursement if available from their health insurance company.

Because patients with a trauma history can be difficult to treat, often involving intense and life-critical issues, I only accept a limited number of clients; not all referrals are accepted for therapy.

If a person has questions about therapy or would like to meet me, I am usually available at no fee to discuss the particulars of an individual's therapy.
